    Small park gathering aimed at safer Canton

    CANTON- There may have been only a handful of people at King Park on Saturday, but those who were there had a purpose — to make Canton a safer place to be. Keynote speaker for the event was Canton Police Chief Bruce Lawver, who talked about community issues and answered questions. He said the police department can’t stand alone. “We are as much a part of the community as everybody else. Police departments were not organized to stand alone.     Protesters march on Statehouse against district-takeover proposal

    Protesters marched to the Statehouse yesterday to oppose a provision in the proposed state budget that would allow mayors to take over school districts with the help of the state school superintendent. More than 100 people met at Front and Broad streets near the Ohio Department of Education offices and listened to speakers who decried the idea, saying it strips them of their power to elect school-board members.
